About the Program

Under the Australian Government’s Skilling Australia for the Future initiative, the Commonwealth has funded the Productivity Places Program, which will deliver more than 700,000 training places over 5 years in areas of skills shortage.

Productivity Places Program training is designed to equip Australian workers with the skills in demand across industry sectors. These training places are being delivered in an industry-driven system, ensuring that training is more responsive to the needs of businesses and participants.

Almost 400,000 training places will be allocated to existing workers wanting to gain new skills or enhance their existing expertise, in addition to more than 300,000 training places allocated to job seekers to help increase their employability and earning potential.

Mainstream Productivity Places Program

The Australian Government delivered mainstream Productivity Places Program job seeker training places from April 2008, with the Program concluding on 30 June 2009.

Individual State and Territory Governments are managing the next phase of the Productivity Places Program, which allows each jurisdiction to respond to local business and learner needs.

Commonwealth Productivity Places Program

From 1 July 2009, the Australian Government's role in the Productivity Places Program is to provide direct funding for two specific sub-elements of the Program, being:
- 10,000 Structural Adjustment Places to support groups of recently retrenched workers(these places have also been referred to as the Targeted Productivity Places Program); and
- 18,900 New Enterprise Incentive Scheme training places over 3 years (6300 NEIS places per year).
