Higher Education Courses

Entry requirements

Anyone over 18 years is eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Accounting / Bachelor of Business degrees or in single Units of a degree. Consideration will be given to younger applicants who prove they can successfully complete a course.

The following entry requirements apply:

1. Conditional enrolment

While high school graduates with a Universities Admission Index (UAI) (or equivalent) of 65 or more receive automatic entry, applicants with a UAI below 65, or who have not completed secondary schooling may apply for conditional enrolment in a single Unit. Successfully completing this Unit enables the student to enrol in other Units unconditionally.

2. Mature age applicants

Applicants over 21 years are automatically granted unconditional enrolment, and are not required to have a UAI score or equivalent. However, English language competence requirements apply to all applicants, regardless of age.

3. Non-native English speakers

Applicants for whom English is a second language, and who did not complete the last two years of their secondary education in English (or at least one year of tertiary education in a country in which English is the language of instruction) are required to provide evidence of English language competence before enrolling. Examples of appropriate evidence:

  • IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 plus the following band scores: 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • TOEFL: 575 (Paper); 231 (Computer); 88 (Internet-based) with not less than: 22 in writing; 20 in reading; 17 in listening; and, 18 in speaking.

4. Recognition of prior learning and advanced standing

Applicants who have undertaken relevant study at other higher education institutions may be granted advanced standing for successfully completed Units. Likewise, applicants who have successfully completed TAFE or other studies in relevant disciplines and/or have appropriate work experience may also receive exemptions from Units.

Exemptions on the basis of previous study may be given for up to 50 per cent of the course. In exceptional circumstances, additional exemptions may be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will not normally be given for work or life experience alone. All applicants considering a request for RPL are advised to consult the Registrar before lodging a formal application.

For all RPL applications for Advanced Standing, applicants must provide suitable documentary evidence such as secondary education and/or previous tertiary or sub-tertiary studies. Studies in unrelated fields may also be taken into account.

5. Enrolling for the first time, and re-enrolling for continuing students

An Academic Year is comprised of 5 consecutive terms each of 10 weeks’ duration. A student may commence a Unit at the beginning of any term throughout the year. This means that halfway through a Unit, a student may decide to start another Unit as well as the one s/he is studying, doing overlapping Units but spreading the load for the two Units across 30 weeks instead of 20 weeks. There is a common break for all students and staff in the last week of each year and the first week of the following year. The following guidelines apply:

  • Any two consecutive 10-week terms constitute a Unit. Therefore, a Unit may be defined as two consecutive terms in which a student satisfies course progression requirements, in particular, successfully passing the assessment for a Unit.
  • Each Unit is completed over two consecutive terms, the first being a Study Term and the second a Review Term for each Unit.
  • Each 10-week term has a set Enrolment Date and a set Census Date by which a student may withdraw without penalty.
  • Students may enrol in any Unit/s in any term (Unit only to prior completion of any prerequisite Units). The term in which a student enrols automatically becomes the Study Term for that Unit (10 weeks), and the following term the Review Term (10 weeks) for that Unit. There are 5 commencement dates each year; students may commence at the beginning of any term during the year.
  • A Review Term is the term that immediately follows a Study Term for a particular Unit, and is the term in which students review and reflect on what they have studied in the previous term, and complete all assessment tasks.
  • As mentioned, students may enrol in other Units while undertaking a review of the previous term’s work and completing assessments. Therefore, a term may be simultaneously the Study Term for one Unit and the Review Term for another Unit.
