Bachelor of Accounting Overview

Cengage Education's Bachelor of Accounting, in association with the National Institute of Accountants (NIA), is a fully accredited and recognised higher education degree in accounting and finance by distance education. Successful completion of this degree provides the required knowledge and skills to start, or enhance, a career in accounting.

The degree provides a direct pathway for vocational graduates into a higher education award, and is recognised by the International Federation of Accountants.

The type and blend of units in the curriculum reflects the requirements of the International Federation of Accountants, providing graduates with a high level of international acceptance and mobility.

Industry recognition.

Cengage Education is a registered Higher Education Institution, and the Bachelor of Accounting degree is an accredited higher education award recognised by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training (DET). The Bachelor of Accounting is a professional qualification endorsed by the National Institute of Accountants, one of Australia's three peak professional accounting bodies, as well as industry bodies, such as the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Marketing Association of Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Institute of Credit Management, and other organisations. The award is recognised nationally and internationally by public and private higher education institutions.

The degree has been designed and co-authored with a very high level of professional input from a spectrum of disciplines that contextualise accounting practice. The Australian Institute of Company Directors has provided advice and co-authored materials relating to corporate governance and the legal environment. The Marketing Association of Australia and New Zealand has co-authored units in marketing concentrating on the financial services sector. The Australian Institute of Credit Management has co-authored units in financial planning and risk management, and ensured that there is a focus on the needs of small to medium enterprises. The Australian Computer Society has provided advice on business computing.

The Australian College of Project Management has co-authored an Introduction to Project Management Unit, the inclusion of which in the core curriculum is unique in Australian undergraduate accounting education. Other peak and industry bodies have also contributed to the philosophy, content and quality assurance of the course. The course complies with the educational and professional standards of the International Federation of Accountants. This ensures a high level of international acceptance of the qualification, especially for trans-national graduates seeking recognition for qualifications gained in Australia.

As one of Australia’s three accounting peak bodies, the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) has been authorised by the Australian government to assess accounting qualifications for the purposes of professional practice and immigration. The Cengage Education Bachelor of Accounting is recognised by the NIA as a professional qualification in Australia, the completion of which by an International Student will meet relevant requirements for immigration purposes.

Are the units transferable between Cengage Education courses and courses offered by other higher education institutions?

Students will be eligible to apply for Advanced Standing for equivalent units at other universities and higher education institutions. Cengage Education currently offers the Bachelor of Accounting, but intends to offer a wide variety of degrees over the coming years, subject to accreditation of these degrees by DET.
