The Diploma of Counselling (CHC51708) is a nationally recognised course offered on behalf of the Australian College of Applied Psychology that provides the first step towards a career in Counselling and entry into the counselling profession. It aims to provide you with generic counselling skills and knowledge including communications skills, knowledge of a range of commonly used counselling modalities, referral skills and the ability to work within an organisations policies and procedures.

Articulation Pathways

Graduates of the Australian College of Applied Psychology’s CHC51708 Diploma of Counselling (CHC51708) can receive advanced standing into the College’s Bachelor of Applied Social Science, Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Counselling), Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Management) or Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Coaching) degree programs equivalent to one year of full time study (8 modules or 24 Credit Points)1. Successful applicants will be required to complete two additional years of full time study to complete the degree program.

1 Students who wish to enter the B App Soc Sc (Couns) will need to demonstrate suitability for the profession in line with existing admission requirements for this application.

Workshop Information

Student’s studying the Diploma of Counselling (CHC51708) will be required to attend on–campus workshops to ensure that they have the necessary face to face interaction to develop and be assessed on communication and other practical skills required for competency

Workshop 1: Duration 2 days
Compulsory if you are taking the module Facilitate the Counselling Process or Counselling Interview Skills by Flexible Delivery. If you study these modules in separate terms you only need to take the workshop once.

Workshop 2: Duration 1 day
Compulsory if you are undertaking the module Monitor Case Management by Flexible Delivery.

Workshop 3: Duration 1 day
Compulsory if you are undertaking the module Counselling Interview Skills by Flexible Delivery.

Workshops can be undertaken at the ACAP campuses in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne.

At least one year of work experience and Higher School Certificate or equivalent

A Certificate IV qualification from either the Community Services or Health Training packages
