The Stanley Awards

Cartooning graduates making waves

For a number of years now, Cengage Education and, previously, the Australian College of Journalism, have been sponsors of the Stanley Awards, which is the Australian Cartoonists' Association equivalent to the TV Logies or the Walkley Awards for Australian Jour nalism. This year we are delighted to say that two of the graduates from our Freelance Cartooning and Illustrating course both won awards.

Congratulations to our graduates Tony Lopes and Jason Chatfield. Tony Lopes won Best Comic Strip Artist with his "Insanity Streak" cartoon strip now appearing in daily newspapers in Australia and the UK. This is the fourth time Tony has won this award (he won previously in 2000, 2001, 2002 and now 2005). Tony graduated in 1994. Jason Chatfield won the Young Cartoonist of the Year having only graduated in January 2005. Tony and Jason are pictured here with our Senior Tutor for the Freelance Cartooning and Illustration course, Max Foley, himself a regular cartoonist for News Limited. Another Tutor for the Freelance Cartooning and Illustrating course, Joanne Brooker, has an exhibition of her work showing in both Iraq and Spain over the next couple of months and we wish her every success for these shows.

Australian Cartoonists' Association

Speaking of the Walkley Awards, congratulations must go to the Australian Cartoonists' Association (ACA), who, in the 50th year of these awards, received the Silver Walkley Award for Most Outstanding Contribution to Journalism.

The ACA is a great supporter of our Cartooning and Illustration graduate students, who all receive 12 months' Associate Membership of the ACA. This includes:

  • Invitations to all ACA functions in all States' where they can meet, chat with and generally rub shoulders with professional cartoonists.
  • Subscription to the ACA magazine Inkspot and the Internet-members' only E-Magazine
  • Regular cartooning e-newsletters and and the Internet-members' only E-Magazine
  • Access to the members'-only forum on the ACA web site.

This gives graduate students access to postings on 'how-to' with cartooning problems, job opportunities, cartooning competitions, exhibitions, conferences both locally and worldwide, cartooning contacts in the UK, Europe and the USA, cartooning market news and direct e-access to many of the country's top cartoonists.

Students are also eligible to attend the annual Stanley's awards and conference at the lower membership rate.
